BioMe Crust Reducer, Treatment for Fat Crust in Septic Tanks 300 g
Biological treatment for the floating fat crust in septic tanks and treatment systems. A high dose of lipase breaks the fat down layer by layer, with no lye and no chlorine.
- Straight onto the crust: sprinkle the powder and spray with water
- Protects the percolation area from fat escaping the tank
- Second use: U-bends and pipes blocked with grease

A fat crust isn’t just unsightly. It ends up in your percolation area too.
A treatment for the floating fat crust in septic tanks and treatment systems. A high dose of lipase, together with Bacillus bacteria, breaks the fat down layer by layer. Sprinkle the powder straight onto the crust and hit it with a strong jet of water. No lye and no chlorine.
- High dose of lipasethe enzyme that breaks down fats
- Sprinkle and sprayno mixing in a bucket
- pH 5–8no chlorine, no lye
- 300 g3–7 treatment applications
A thick crust, a rancid smell and percolation pipes that keep clogging
Oil, butter, lard and sauces are lighter than water. They collect on the surface of the tank and over time harden into a dense, rubbery crust anywhere from a few to more than ten centimetres thick. Ordinary bacteria break down fresh fat, but not a crust that’s months old.
- A thick brown or grey layer when you lift the lid
- A sharp, rancid smell, different from the usual tank smell
- The percolation pipes clog often, even after cleaning
- Level sensor floats no longer work properly
As the tank fills, pieces of crust are pushed towards the outlet. The fat ends up in the percolation area and blocks the pipe perforations from the inside.
Sprinkle, spray, repeat every 2–3 days
Lift the lid
Look at the crust and choose the dose by its thickness.
Sprinkle the powder
2–4 scoops, evenly, straight onto the crust. Don’t dissolve it in water first.
Spray hard
With a garden hose, say. The jet drives the powder into the fat and wakes the bacteria.
The powder is deliberately very poorly soluble in water (0.1%). With water it forms a viscous solution that stays on the fat layer. Dissolved in a bucket, the solution would sink beneath the crust.

Crust treatment
- Under 5 cm
- 2 scoops, 2–3 applications
- 5–10 cm
- 3 scoops, 3–5 applications
- Over 10 cm
- 4 scoops, 5–7 applications
- How often
- every 2–3 days, until the crust is gone
Prevention
- Dose
- 1 scoop
- How often
- every 1–2 weeks
- Application
- down the toilet, in the evening
Kitchen drain blocked with grease: in the evening, put 1–2 scoops straight into the drain, after 1–2 minutes run a strong jet of water for about 10 seconds, then leave for 6–8 hours with no water. Repeat every 2–3 days, usually 2–4 applications.
Don’t use hot water: above 30°C the bacteria and enzymes lose their activity. After chlorine, wait 48 hours; after lye-based unblockers, a few days. Don’t apply on days with a lot of gas boiler condensate or when the water softener is regenerating.
What this product won’t do
It isn’t for the sludge at the bottom
It has a high dose of lipase, made for fats. Bottom sludge needs a different breakdown mechanism.
One application won’t do it
Lipase works layer by layer, from the surface down. A thick crust needs a series of applications.
It won’t replace mechanical removal of extreme crusts
With a crust over 15 cm thick and years old, it may be simpler to have the desludging contractor remove the thickest pieces first.
What our customers ask
What is this product for?
For the floating fat crust in septic tanks and domestic treatment systems. Second use: fat and protein deposits in U-bends, pipes and soil stacks. It’s a treatment targeted at fat. For septic tanks in general we have BioMe Septic Tank Balance, and for aerated systems BioMe SBR Booster.
When will I see the first results?
Within 24–48 hours of the first dose, the crust becomes less compact and holes and cracks appear. Complete removal usually takes 7–10 days for a thin crust, 10–14 days for a medium one and 14–21 days for a thick one.
Can I pour it down the toilet?
For prevention, yes: 1 scoop down the toilet in the evening. For an existing crust, no: the dose spreads through the tank and only a little reaches the surface. In that case, sprinkle the powder straight onto the crust through the lid.
Will the crust come back after treatment?
If kitchen grease keeps going into the tank, the crust will rebuild within a few months. That’s why, after the treatment, you should carry on with 1 scoop every 1–2 weeks, down the toilet.
How long does a pack last?
300 g is enough for 3–7 treatment applications or 7–10 weeks of prevention. With a very thick crust, one pack may not be enough for the whole treatment.
Everything you need to know
Ingredients
Maltodextrin (carrier), non-pathogenic Bacillus bacteria (GRAS status), enzymes with a high dose of lipase, plus alpha-amylase, alkaline protease, neutral protease and cellulase, lemon fragrance, trace elements. Beige-brown powder, pH 5–8, deliberately very low water solubility (0.1%), fully biodegradable.
Storage
- In the original pack, tightly sealed, somewhere dry (up to 25°C)
- Away from moisture: damp activates the bacteria inside the pack
- Away from direct sunlight and strong oxidisers (acids, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine products)
- Out of reach of children
- Use within 24 months of opening
Precautions
The powder is dusty: don’t breathe it in when sprinkling, and keep your face above the lid or drain, not above the powder. May irritate the eyes: in case of contact, rinse with water for several minutes. Do not swallow. Keep out of reach of children.
